Great Detachment

The Great Detachment refers to a labor market trend where employees remain in their roles but feel emotionally or mentally disengaged from their work and organization.

This trend is especially widespread among younger generations of workers and brings about new HR challenges in the workplace.

Unlike the Great Resignation, the Great Detachment does not involve mass resignations. Instead, it manifests as declining engagement, motivation, and performance. This phenomenon is often linked to burnout, lack of recognition, or limited development opportunities.

Signs of the Great Detachment

  • Gradual disengagement
  • Decreased productivity
  • Lack of initiative
  • Increased presenteeism
  • Weak sense of belonging

Organizational impact

The Great Detachment represents a significant risk to organizational performance. HR teams play a critical role in preventing it through initiatives focused on employee experience, recognition, performance management, and skills development.
